Your role in the community
Shared Values, Shared Responsibilities
Becoming a British citizen or settling in the UK brings opportunities as well as responsibilities.

Core Responsibilities
Obey and respect the law, respect others' rights, treat people fairly, behave responsibly, help your family, respect the environment, work to provide for yourself.
Ways to Get Involved
Neighbourhood
Be a good neighbour, join Neighbourhood Watch.
Schools
Volunteer at your child's school, join the PTA, or become a school governor.
Politics
Join a political party, campaign for issues you care about.
Volunteering
Help at hospitals, charities, food banks, museums, or community centres.
Donate
Give blood, register as an organ donor. Both save lives.
Jury Service
If called, you must serve. It is a vital part of the justice system.

Jury Service
If you are between 18 and 75 and on the electoral register, you may be called for jury service. It usually lasts around 10 working days.
Why Jury Service Matters
Juries are a cornerstone of British justice. Twelve ordinary people decide whether someone is guilty or not guilty.
Getting Involved at School
Many parents volunteer at their children's school. A more formal role is becoming a school governor. Contact your local school to ask if they need new governors.

Blood and Organ Donation
Donated blood helps people with illnesses and accidents. Register as an organ donor on the NHS Organ Donor Register.
Volunteering
Thousands of charities in the UK need help. Look for opportunities at your local library, council website, or volunteer centres.
Benefits of Volunteering
Volunteering helps others, builds confidence, teaches new skills, looks great on your CV, and helps you feel part of your community.
Looking After the Environment
Recycle
Separate paper, plastic, glass, and food waste.
Shop Local
Buy from local shops and farmers' markets.
Walk or Cycle
Use public transport, walk, or cycle instead of driving.
Save Energy
Turn off lights, insulate your home. Every bit helps.
The Bigger Picture
The UK has committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Small actions by millions of people add up to a big difference.
Supporting Political Parties
Joining a political party is a great way to get involved in democracy. You can support a party's values and help with election campaigns.
