Taking the life in the UK Test
What to Expect
The Life in the UK test has 24 questions covering everything in this handbook. Every test is different — the questions are pulled from a big pool so yours will not be the same as your neighbour's.

Key Fact
The test is usually taken in English, but you can arrange to take it in Welsh or Scottish Gaelic. You can only take the test at a registered test centre.
Before the Test
- Book online at www.lifeintheuktest.gov.uk
- There are about 60 test centres around the UK
- Take ID and proof of your address — without them you cannot sit the test
- Read the booking instructions carefully and check your details before submitting
Heads Up
Only use registered test centres. The UK Border Agency will only accept certificates from official centres. If you live on the Isle of Man or Channel Islands, different rules apply.
How to Use This Handbook
The whole book is testable — including this introduction. Read everything. The glossary at the back has key words and phrases that might help.
The "Check that you understand" boxes show you what to focus on, but knowing just those points is not enough. You need to understand everything in the book.
