Becoming a permanent resident

Two Things You Need
To become a permanent resident or British citizen you must show two things:
- You can speak and read English (or Welsh / Scottish Gaelic)
- You know your stuff about life in the UK
Good to Know
The Life in the UK test is written at ESOL Entry Level 3 — that is roughly the level of a native English speaker who has left school at 16. If your English is at this level you do not need a separate English exam.
Two Paths to Success
Path 1 — Take the Test
Sit the Life in the UK test directly. This is the route for most people on work visas (Tier 1 and Tier 2).
Path 2 — ESOL + Citizenship
If your English is below Entry Level 3, take an ESOL course that includes citizenship. You learn English and UK life at the same time.
How to Apply
Once you pass, fill in the right form for your situation and pay the fee. Fees vary depending on your application type. All forms and fee details are on the UK Border Agency website.
From October 2013
You need to pass the Life in the UK test AND provide evidence of English at B1 level (ESOL Entry Level 3). Check the UKBA website for the latest rules before you apply.
