Music: From Purcell to Pop
British music is world-famous. Classical composers like Henry Purcell, George Frideric Handel (who wrote the Water Music and Messiah), Sir Edward Elgar (Pomp and Circumstance), and Benjamin Britten shaped orchestral music for centuries.
The BBC Proms is an eight-week summer classical festival ending with the famous Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Glastonbury, the Isle of Wight Festival, and the National Eisteddfod of Wales are major annual music events.

British Pop Music
From The Beatles and The Rolling Stones (1960s) to punk (1970s), the Britpop era (1990s), and today's global stars like Adele, Ed Sheeran, and Harry Styles — British pop music has shaped global culture. The Brit Awards and Mercury Music Prize celebrate the best of British music.
Theatre
Britain has a world-famous theatre tradition. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is the most famous playwright in history — his plays are performed everywhere. The West End in London is the heart of British theatre, alongside the Royal Shakespeare Company (Stratford-upon-Avon), the National Theatre, and the Royal Opera House.
